Case against Dhoni for hurting sentiments

Dhoni depicted as Lord Vishnu on the cover of Business Today magazine

As reported by news agency PTI, a case has been registered by a Bangalore court against Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni for allegedly denigrating a Hindu god and hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindus. The image in question had appeared on the cover of the April 14th issue of Business Today magazine which is published by the India Today group.

The image appears to have been created by the magazine and it is not clear whether Dhoni posed for the photograph or if he provided his consent for the image.

Hiremath had alleged that by posing for an advertisement in a business magazine as Lord Vishnu holding several things including a shoe in his hands, Dhoni had denigrated the Hindu god and hurt religious feelings of the Hindus. Taking cognisance of the offence and registering the case, the court has posted it to May 12 for recording of the statement of the complainant.

Bride goes on horse to groom's house, asks for his hand

Normally, boys consider it their birth right to take out the baraat. But for Praveen Patidar, 30, a state government employee, seeing his wife coming to marry him on a horse was a matter of pride.
INDORE: Rajni, a 25-year-old law student, dressed in best bridal finery, mounted a horse and took her baraat (marriage procession) to the groom's house through her village. After an hour-long marriage procession and dancing on the streets, she went to mandap (pandal) and asked the groom to marry her.

Unbelievable though it may sound, but that is exactly what happened at a marriage in Satwara village of Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh.

The unique tradition — 'Kanya Ghatari' — which was practised by the Patidar community, wherein the bride takes her baraat to the groom's place, had long been forgotten, was brought alive. Senior members of the community endorsed Rajni's initiative to revive the age old tradition and lavished praise on her.

Rajni, who got married two days ago, initially felt a little awkward at the idea of riding a horse and taking the baraat to the groom's place. "I realized that the idea was to empower women and this practice would certainly eradicate many evils in the society," she said.

Normally, boys consider it their birth right to take out the baraat. But for Praveen Patidar, 30, a state government employee, seeing his wife coming to marry him on a horse was a matter of pride.

Groom's father Ishwarlal Patel said that even on the wedding card that was printed a month ago, there was a message of women empowerment. He said his family wished that their daughter-in-law would take her baraat to their house.

About the tradition, he said first the bride was offered coconut by her parents. After completing the ritual, the girl mounted the horse and led the baraat from her house, which after passing from the narrow lanes of village, reached the groom's place.

The girl then came up to the mandap (pandal) on the horse and proposed the groom, asking him whether he would marry her. Waiting family members of the groom welcomed the bride. Thereafter, the marriage was solemnized.

irregularities in the EWS admission process

Investigation into alleged irregularities in the admission process at Mount Caramel School has been transferred from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to Zilla Parishad. The move comes after loopholes were found in the inquiry conducted by the PMC.
"The school comes under the purview of PMC. But the complainants were unhappy with the investigation and pointed out various loopholes in the civic body's report. After this, the case was transferred to us. Our education officer has started probing the matter," said ZP education officer (primary) D Kurhade.
The complainants were education activists Arvind Gore and Nilesh Borate. "The admission procedure of the school was not at all transparent. In the 25 per cent quota reserved for students from the Economically Weaker Sections, priority is given to students living withing 3 km. Instead, eligible students within the 3-km radius were rejected and those from far away given admission," said Nilesh Borate.
"Although no fee should be charged from students belonging to EWS category, the school had charged fee from these students. Apart from this there was lack of transparency in the entire admission procedure," he added.
"The inquiry done by PMC was inadequate and there were many loopholes in the report. Hence, we requested the ZP education officer to investigate the case," he said.
The inquiry into the school's admission procedure will be conducted by KD Bhujbal, extension education officer, ZP.
"We have asked the school to provide us with the required documents and have also asked the Principal to attend the panchayat samiti," said KD Bhujbal.

Private schools fall under RTI: Court

NEW DELHI: In a major boost to transparency in school admissions, the Delhi high court has ruled that private unaided schools in the capital will be covered under the RTI Act.

Justice Rajiv Shakdher on Thursday dismissed the challenge by a federation of schools to Central Information Commission (CIC) order asking them to ensure that information regarding admission is made public. HC upheld the order asking schools to display information on total number of seats in a school, total vacancies in all classes, total seats under EWS quota, seats available under the quota, total applications received under the quota, information about when EWS quota applications will be received and date on which the admissions will take place. They have been asked to update the information on a weekly basis.

HC also directed the education director to ensure compliance of the court's directions. The schools however, did get limited relief from the court which agreed to their plea and exempted them from making public budget estimates of receipts, payments of the ensuing year, final accounts and the statement showing disbursement of salaries.
